About the Company

eWebinar was co-founded by Melissa Kwan and David Dawson, her CTO and partner, in Vancouver, BC. Designed to meet the needs of businesses in sales, marketing, and customer success, the platform allows users to transform videos into automated webinars. This innovation provides companies an opportunity to avoid the repetitive process of conducting live webinars multiple times, focusing instead on an efficient way to communicate with audiences. The company operates with a unique model, working entirely with contractors rather than full-time employees, allowing flexibility and global collaboration.

The eWebinar platform fills a gap in the market for companies looking to automate interactive video content, providing customers with a professional, scalable solution that allows participants to engage in real-time or leave responses. Currently, eWebinar maintains a high monthly recurring revenue (MRR) of $50,000 and caters to a diverse customer base that values both efficiency and interactivity.

Idea Behind Company

Melissa’s idea for eWebinar emerged from her frustration with repetitive, time-consuming webinars conducted manually in her previous startup, an enterprise SaaS. She was spending significant time on repetitive tasks like training and sales demos, realizing the need for a solution to automate the process. From this experience, she envisioned a platform that would allow business owners to automate their webinars without compromising the interactive experience, enabling them to focus on other business areas.

This idea resonated with other founders who experienced similar challenges, highlighting a gap in the market. Other automated webinar solutions existed but often had deceptive practices, leading Melissa to design eWebinar with a focus on transparency, integrity, and a high-quality, professional approach that would allow seamless automation without misleading participants.

Creating the Company

development team to build the platform. She emphasized creating a feature-rich initial version that would provide enough value for users to pay from the start, rather than offering a free beta. The team concentrated on automation and included a unique asynchronous chat system that would set them apart from competitors, providing live and delayed chat responses. This feature aimed to enhance user interaction, allowing hosts to engage with participants as needed or reply later.

eWebinar’s focus on automation and global contractor collaboration helped Melissa sidestep full-time staffing challenges. Her preference for using contractors instead of full-time employees meant the company could operate with less overhead and retain high-quality global talent. This approach not only reduced expenses but also attracted talent passionate about eWebinar's vision.

Launching the Business

eWebinar’s launch involved significant personal networking, as Melissa reached out to individuals who might benefit from the platform, arranging calls to introduce the product. Each prospect was given a trial period, during which Melissa conducted onboarding calls, guiding users through setting up their first webinar to ensure smooth navigation. These sessions provided valuable user feedback that allowed the team to address user experience issues early on, ensuring that the platform was intuitive and straightforward.

Beyond direct outreach, Melissa tested different acquisition strategies, including digital marketing, but found word-of-mouth and referrals to be the most effective means of attracting customers. This reliance on referrals has been beneficial for fostering organic growth, although the company is still experimenting with scalable marketing approaches. Personalized customer support and quick response times have also played a crucial role in maintaining client satisfaction and encouraging retention.

Earnings

Today, eWebinar generates $50,000 in monthly recurring revenue but is not yet profitable, though profitability is within reach. Melissa envisions a future where eWebinar remains a modest-sized, profitable company, with high revenue per team member rather than an overly large organization. Her goal is to maintain a company that allows her to work with friends and sustain a balanced life, prioritizing personal fulfillment over aggressive growth.

In her view, the best approach to success has been creating a product that consistently delivers value, focusing on user experience, and fostering customer loyalty. By providing an experience that "just works," eWebinar has managed to attract and retain clients without the need for a massive support team, allowing Melissa to pursue her vision of a fulfilling, well-rounded life beyond the demands of her business.
