Idea Behind Company

The inspiration for Mailman stemmed from Mohit’s personal challenges in managing his inbox while brainstorming new project ideas. He developed a script to batch email deliveries every four hours, significantly improving his workflow. This experiment sparked the idea to turn the script into a product.  

A pivotal moment occurred when Andrew Wilkinson, a tech entrepreneur, noticed the script and its potential. Recognizing its value, Andrew proposed transforming the concept into a full-fledged business. Mohit partnered with Andrew, and their complementary skills laid the foundation for Mailman’s development.  

Their shared vision was to build a tool that could act as a gatekeeper for inboxes, enabling users to focus on what matters most. This vision, combined with their commitment to solving a universal problem, set the stage for Mailman’s success as a SaaS product.  

Creating the Company

Mailman’s journey began with leveraging resources from Andrew’s agency, Z1, for branding and user interface design. Within weeks, the agency delivered an initial prototype, which Mohit swiftly developed into a functional product. This collaboration allowed for rapid iteration and deployment.  

However, building Mailman wasn’t without challenges. The company had to complete Google’s rigorous Security Assessment, a requirement for products integrated with Gmail. The process was expensive and time-consuming, stretching over several months. Despite this hurdle, the team remained determined to launch.  

As they neared completion, Mailman began beta testing, gathering feedback from early adopters. These interactions provided crucial insights into user needs, allowing the team to refine the product before its public release. This iterative approach laid the groundwork for Mailman’s customer-centric philosophy.  

Launching the Business


Mailman officially launched on Product Hunt in October 2020, following months of anticipation built through a waitlist. The team capitalized on Andrew’s social media influence to attract thousands of early signups, generating significant initial interest.  

Prior to the public launch, Mohit personally onboarded hundreds of users via one-on-one calls. This direct interaction helped uncover pain points, align the product with user expectations, and create a loyal customer base. These onboarding efforts also contributed to word-of-mouth promotion.  

To further amplify the launch, the team collaborated with Tiny’s DoubleUp agency to craft an effective email marketing campaign. This strategy not only converted early adopters into paying customers but also secured Mailman’s position as a reliable productivity tool in the market.  

Earnings

Mailman now generates $30K in monthly recurring revenue (MRR) and has achieved profitability within its first year of operation. Its pricing model and feature set appeal to professionals seeking to optimize their email management without unnecessary complexity.  

The company has ambitious plans to expand its offerings. Upcoming features include enhanced automation tools, such as the ability to auto-reply, auto-forward, or integrate with external tools like Zapier. Additionally, Mailman plans to introduce a “Magazine” feature to create a centralized, visually appealing space for reading newsletters.
