About the Company

Pack Up + Go specializes in planning domestic surprise trips, offering options like Plane/Train Trips, Road Trips, Outdoor Road Trips, and Staycations. Each package includes curated hotel reservations, detailed itineraries, and 24/7 traveler support. The company prioritizes the traveler experience and aims to make vacations fun, memorable, and beneficial for local economies. A focus on smaller U.S. cities allows the business to promote hidden gems and support local communities.

The agency's ethos revolves around creating connections and fostering excitement. By ensuring a high-quality experience and supporting small businesses, Pack Up + Go contributes positively to tourism and encourages travelers to explore less conventional destinations.

Idea Behind Company

The inspiration for Pack Up + Go struck Lillian during a hostel conversation in Riga, Latvia, where she learned about a European surprise travel agency. Recognizing a gap in the U.S. market, she decided to establish a similar concept. At the time, Lillian was 23, working in sales, and searching for a passion-driven career.

Her motivation stemmed from her love of exploring new places and her belief in travel’s power to connect people and cultures. By focusing on domestic destinations, she aimed to inspire Americans to appreciate their country’s diverse landscapes and vibrant communities, turning underappreciated cities into exciting travel experiences.

Creating the Company

Lillian spent six weeks refining her business concept while traveling. She decided to limit destinations to the U.S. to encourage domestic exploration. Early challenges included selecting a name and navigating the technicalities of setting up a business. With her grandmother’s support, she secured the Pack Up + Go domain, marking the official start.

The breakthrough came when she won a local pitch competition, which validated her idea and provided confidence. Her first media coverage through Business Insider resulted in immediate orders, signaling demand and propelling the business into operation. The initial months involved learning on the job, fine-tuning processes, and establishing trust with customers.

Launching the Business

Pack Up + Go’s initial marketing success relied on authentic customer interactions. Travelers were encouraged to share photos of their experiences, which became a signature marketing strategy. Physical envelopes revealing trip destinations created anticipation and excitement, resonating with customers seeking novelty in their vacations.

The company also formed partnerships with brands like Ford and WeddingWire, leveraging mutual benefits to grow its audience. A private alumni Facebook group fosters community engagement, offering exclusive perks and feedback opportunities. Lillian emphasizes that a strong focus on customer experience has been integral to building loyalty and trust.

Earnings

The company operates on a straightforward business model, earning revenue through a 20% service fee and commissions on hotel bookings. Despite challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, Pack Up + Go introduced new trip types, including Staycations and Outdoor Road Trips, which diversified offerings and bolstered revenue.

By maintaining profitability through prepayments and low overhead costs, the business remained resilient and adaptable. With projected growth in customized itineraries and broader travel options, Lillian aims to expand her company’s reach and customer base while staying true to its mission of making travel exciting and accessible.
