Game Day Special: Just How Super Is This Bowl?

Hi Enthusiast,

All eyes are on the Kansas City Chiefs as they chase a potential “three-peat” against the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend. But if they plan to use the term, they'll need to cut a check to Pat Riley, Miami Heat president, who trademarked it over 30 years ago during his time coaching the Lakers.

Meanwhile, the real debate in our world is over which flavors to serve as we contribute to the staggering 1.47 billion chicken wings Americans are expected to devour this Sunday.

Before we dive into our sports-centric edition, let’s take a quick detour to recap yesterday’s market action. The S&P 500, Nasdaq 100, and Russell 2000 all saw gains on Wednesday, with small-cap stocks leading the charge. Tech giants like Nvidia and Super Micro Computer saw big jumps, but honestly, our focus is on the chips we’ll be dunking this Sunday.

No one has a closer eye on the action at Super Bowl LIX than Amazon.

While the spotlight will naturally shine on the game itself this Sunday in New Orleans, there’s an unseen force shaping the way it’s played: Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Since 2017, AWS has partnered with the NFL, tracking every player’s movements with sensors embedded in their shoulder pads — and even one in the football. The league gathers millions of data points each game, using AI to analyze player movements, assess injury risks, and propose rule changes to enhance safety.

Game-changing impact: AWS's data has been a game-changer, directly influencing two major rule changes: the new “Dynamic Kickoff” formation and the ban on the hip-drop tackle, which was found to cause injuries at a rate 20 times higher than typical pass or run plays. Super Bowl LIX will be the first to see these rules enforced.

"Are you not entertained?": While AWS’s head of sports tells us that the goal is to make the game safer, some fans we spoke to questioned whether the push for change is more about profit than protection. With all this data, viewers can now see—and even bet on—statistics like the likelihood of a completed pass or the odds of a successful fourth-down conversion.

The Takeaway

Is all this data a blessing or a curse for the game? It's hard to say, but one thing’s for sure: it’s a win for Amazon.

In the midst of the AI and spending frenzy, it’s easy to overlook that Amazon, which reports earnings after the bell today, is pulling in massive profits from AWS, which accounted for 60% of the company’s total profit last quarter.

Record-breaking Super Bowl ad prices hit mind-blowing new heights.

As streaming dominates the TV landscape, brands are racing for one of the final opportunities to capture a massive live audience. With over 100 million viewers expected to tune in for the big game, advertisers are shelling out more than ever to grab a slice of the action.

Reports suggest that Fox, the Super Bowl broadcaster this year, sold at least 10 commercial slots for upwards of $8 million each, breaking last year’s $7 million record. That’s about 213 times higher than the $37,500 price tag of the first Super Bowl ad in 1967.

"I only watch for the ads" — The commercials themselves have become an event in their own right. The price for a 30-second spot is only the beginning—companies also face production costs and celebrity fees, which can push the total price of a single ad into the tens of millions. For example, Amazon’s 2022 Alexa ad starring Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson reportedly came with a $26 million price tag.

The Takeaway

Streaming has changed the advertising game, but the Super Bowl remains one of the last big opportunities to capture an enormous live audience with a single commercial, as Fox Sports’ EVP of sales put it. While streaming platforms still fine-tune their ad models, traditional live TV is still a major win for advertisers.

What else we're munching on:
  • Meet the NFL outsider who could be the sharpest team-builder the league has ever known.
  • Naturally, Taylor Swift will be there, with every move she makes sparking a flurry of bets.
  • Some fans are convinced the colors in the Super Bowl logo hold the key to predicting which teams will make it to the big game each year.
